Portugal Golden Visa: what the 7-day stay rule really means in practice

Portugal's Golden Visa has one of the lightest physical presence requirements among EU residency routes. "Light" is often misread as "none," though, which is where applicants get into trouble.

The actual math behind the 7-day rule

The requirement is an average of 7 days per year, calculated over each two-year renewal period. That means a total of 14 days physically in Portugal across a two-year window satisfies it; it isn't 7 days annually as a strict yearly minimum.

In practice, most applicants split this into two short visits: one trip to complete biometrics and initial paperwork, and a second later in the period to renew documentation. Families with school-age children, or professionals whose work is based elsewhere, use this flexibility deliberately.

Where the rule is most often misunderstood

Minimal stay does not mean minimal commitment. The investment itself is held for a defined period, and the residency permit must still be actively renewed on schedule. Relying on the stay rule being generous is fine; assuming it's automatic is not.

The tradeoff: time to citizenship

Portugal's residency-to-citizenship path is measured in years, not months, and it got longer as of a May 2026 law change. Nationals of EU and Portuguese-speaking countries now need 7 years; everyone else needs 10 years, up from the previous 5-year rule. It also now requires an A2-level Portuguese language test and a civic knowledge assessment. The light stay requirement applies to maintaining residency, not to the eventual citizenship application. Permanent residency, a separate track, is still available after 5 years.
